Redept advised the Hilversum Public Library and People's University on the purchase of part of the De Gooische Brink shopping centre to accommodate the new library and related organisations.
On behalf of the Public Library and Volksuniversiteit Hilversum, Redept acquired a part of the De Gooische Brink shopping centre of around 4,656 m2 to accommodate the new library. The Volksuniversiteit will also move into the building. Establishing the library at this location is part of the realisation of the Mediaplein.
The Mediaplein will be a new representation of Hilversum’s strong reputation as a media city. There is a lot of programming available around media and culture, there are many individual media makers, there are strong organisations with executive power in the city and there is interest from residents and visitors. The trick is to combine what already exists and to add new elements to it all the time.
In the heart of Hilversum, on and around the traditional ‘Brink’, the Library, Museum Hilversum and Sound and Vision are working together on the Mediaplein. In and around this media square, cultural, social and educational organisations research, interpret, develop and present various forms of media with which society is confronted. The Mediaplein Hilversum Foundation fulfills this mission by, among other things, working on the attractiveness of Hilversum and (better) handling the rapidly changing forms of media.
The Hilversum library is not just a library; it is the library of Hilversum Media City. When the library was founded, books, newspapers and magazines were the main forms of media; they are still important, but a wide spectrum of media has been added, audiovisual and digital. And it is precisely with these media that Hilversum has grown. Hilversum Library connects what Hilversum is good at (media) with what the library is good at (talent development and access to media).
