Now that turnover in the legal profession is not what it used to, the costs of property, personnel and the ‘paper’ place increasing pressure on profitability. And lawyers already have high overheads compared with other service providers. If lawyers want to close the financial year with positive numbers then they need to take control urgently. Cost consciousness and cost control are the keywords here. But how can you deal with all the costs that are ‘fixed’ and supposedly cannot be reduced? Experts from inside and outside the legal profession shared their experiences in the study afternoon on 15 April 2014 organised by Celsus legal publishers and SupportlawyerOnLine. They have ideas about over efficiently slicing away costs outside the familiar channels, about renegotiation, letting go and disposals. But also about investment, making clear choices and positioning. In this way the legal profession can prevent its monthly costs becoming a millstone.
